Although varicose veins can develop anywhere on the body, they’re most often observed on our legs or feet. Compared to spider veins, varicose veins are larger and may have a blue or purple color. Sometimes they manifest as cords that may bulge or appear twisted.
They may appear in women who have been pregnant. They may also appear in anyone, male or female, brought about by prolonged standing. Varicose veins are generally not painful, but sometimes they can become painful.
At Northwest Vein Center, we are pleased to offer the Venefit® procedure, in addition to other treatment modalities for the comprehensive management of venous disease. Like laser ablation, it is a minimally invasive ambulatory treatment alternative to surgical stripping of the greater or lesser saphenous vein.
Under ultrasound guidance a small catheter is inserted, usually through a needle puncture in the skin, into the damaged vein. After local anesthesia has been placed around the vein, the catheter is activated and slowly pulled back through the diseased vein. As the catheter is withdrawn, it delivers radiofrequency energy to the vein wall causing collagen to shrink and the vein to close.
Following the procedure, the catheter is removed and a bandage or compression stocking is placed on the treated leg. Like laser ablation, the Venefit® procedure may be combined with a mini-phlebectomy procedure.
There are several endovenous lasers being used in the treatment of varicose veins these days. Typical Diode lasers emit a wavelength anywhere from 810 to 980nm. It is the wavelength that is the critical factor in this kind of treatment, and with a wavelength of 1320nm, the CoolTouch CTEV™ requires less heat to close your vein and thus you experience less pain and a speedier recovery.
During the procedure a small single needle is placed into the vein and through the needle the laser fiber is inserted. The laser is activated and as the fiber is moved through the vein it heats and closes the vein. After the procedure your leg will be wrapped in a compression bandage and you will be up and walking the same day.
